Glad you liked it! As a graphic designer I use Photoshop literally everyday and the basic snow process was one I picked up from an Adobe instructor I know.
I started by looking at the channels to find the one with the most white displayed on the tops of the trees/track. I duplicate this channel.
With the channel selected, open Curves. I then clicked anywhere on the curve to make a point, change Output to 227, Input to 154.
Create a second point, change its Output to 33, Input to 48.
Cmd/Ctrl + click on the channel to create a selection.
Go back to the Layers menu and create a new layer.
Open up the colors and pick e6e6e6 and fill the selection and deselect.
I repeated the same process but added a masked layer and filled it with black. Take a large soft brush, and begin to paint white to reveal snow in those areas only.
The snow blowing across is an obvious method which you already know.

Dave, excellent. I'm really pleased to see someone else is playing with pictures but you must tell us how you achieved the effect as my method will do the snow but won't whiten the picture.

That was the bit I was unsure about! Hard to tell unless you've seen the control box - which having looked at your pic I now have! I suppose it makes sense to those that work with them. It'll be interesting to see the vinyls up on the shunters!

I'm looking at a vinyl for the three Tidal Monsters. What do you think of this?
Sorry Martin, but what is it?
Dave,
I think most people know that I designed the Margam Moors Sheep stickers that went onto 60007, 60052, 08630, Breakdown Crane......, so now I'm looking at something similar for the three Tidal Monsters as I call them. The vinyl obviously shows Tidal Monsters and the bit in the middle is the remote control box for 08921 which has had some "Stamp" treatment in Photoshop together with the text. It's not a bird as the Fforestfach Veg seems to think. On one of my recent images at Tidal, you'll see the original image of the remote control box. Plan is for Billy Basher to approve it together with the driver that helped me with the Tidal web page and then I get the stickers printed up and fitted to the three Tidal Monsters. Pongo will obviously be the first to be vinyled as it is our flagship gronk. Incidentally Billy Basher named Pongo more than twelve years ago at Canton Depot and I must have been one of the first to picture it.

Ta to Billy Basher and the Treorchy Tafia.
The picture will never set the world on fire but in its own right I'm real pleased with it, as its a hand held exposure of 1/2sec, f5.6 @ 6400asa. I have reduced the grain using the luminance filter to enable a modest bit of sharpening.
Billy laid on a real good show with all the locos positioned and repositioned to my likening.

A bit late in posting but the 550D virtually brought my medievil computer to a stop, so exchanged it for a nearly new handbuilt machine with Windows 7, CS5 Dreamweaver and photoshop but the latter wouldn't read off the 550D, so had to get a plug in to look at the images.

One of the first pictures off my 550D at 250mm focal length. Not a lot of difference in the quality of the image between the two cameras except that the colours are much richer and saturated with the 550D.
I also took a couple of pictures at 6400ASA and I was quite impressed with the quality which compared favorably wit the 400D at 800ASA.
I don't like the fact that the battery grip, batteries and memory cards are not interchangeable but I'm glad the ASA button has been moved out of the way as I have a habit of inadvertently setting it to 1600ASA as my fingers twitch for a shed.
